Teen birthday food activity options for someone with an eating disorder?

My teen wants some food-centered activities for their birthday, but we've got an attendee who has an eating disorder. We'll be making individual pizzas and baking cookies. What additional food options would be good to have available? The friend is also eating gluten free. [more inside]

Organic, grass-fed flank steak in the kitchen, the burner turned "HIGH"

That burner will be red hot in about seven minutes. Thick bottom, big honkin' pan. I know to sear it, both sides, and then cook it in ???? for an hour, give or take. I'm thinking a can of tomatoes. 30 minutes in, chop up an onion. I've got this really great great salsa (medium -- why won't they stock hot? And I don't have even one jalapeño. Dang...) Broccoli and some almonds at the end of the show. What else? An egg? Do tell.

Indian Pickle 101

I think I'm aware that Indian people use the word "pickle" in a much more expansive way than westerners - maybe it really means something more like preserving and not just using pickling salts, vinegar, but also oils, etc? [more inside]

Safe to reheat lasagna after already having heated it?

Yesterday, a friend brought me homemade lasagna with ricotta and (cooked already) ground beef. We heated it up, but it wasn't fully heated. We were in a hurry due to a birthday party, so I ate some of it (kind of lukewarm) then put it in the refrigerator. It was really good. Is it safe to bake again (this time, to doneness)?

Where can I get soft, small dates for an appetizer?

I recently attended a reception that featured a buffet table with appetizers, including dates stuffed with peanut butter. The stuffed dates were accompanied by a small bowl of strawberry jam, and you could spoon some of the jam on top of the date before you ate it. This appetizer was totally delicious, and I consumed like a dozen of them. I want to duplicate this item at home. [more inside]

Can I eat this? Dried Apricot Edition

I left two pounds of dried apricots in a metal mailbox for two days in eighty-degree heat. They were sealed in plastic. When I retrieved them it was like holding a radiating heat pack. It's dried fruit; it's gotta be ok to eat, right? Right? They went into the freezer.

Give me your snack ideas!

I need snack ideas as I'm bored with my current options and find myself buying chips and cookies and stuff more than I want. I'd like low-sodium/low-lactose (so yogurt probably out) and vegetarian options that are relatively healthy and aren't super carb heavy. Right now I rotate unsalted cashews, fruit, homemade popcorn, and string cheese but I'm tapped out on other idea. Savory better than sweet. Thanks!

Sip it good

The weather’s getting warmer so I’ve been thinking about fruit soups… We have three soups in regular rotation - watermelon gazpacho, honeydew mint, and a sweet strawberry yogurt soup. I’d love some more! Could be sweet or savory or spicy or…? [more inside]

Gluten-free booze-free dinner party gift?

It’s not really a dinner party, more like a get-together before dinner, I think. But I’ve never been to this friend’s house, so I don’t want to show up empty-handed. Difficulty is, everyone gathering is traveling from at least an hour away, and host has celiac so: No booze because driving, and no gluten. It’s tonight. What should I bring? Additional difficulty: I can barely boil water, so no fancy cooking allowed. I’d prefer to just buy something somewhere.

(How) Can I Eat THis? Frozen Fish Edition

So, I have a small sealed package of tilapia fillets. I was going to cook them in a sauce tonight, but events have made that impossible. The package says to that in the refrigerator for 5-10 hours, and I took them out of the freezer (and put them in the refrigerator) about three hours ago. They are still very hard and cold. My options: [more inside]

Find my daughter a protein shake?

My daughter would like to try a protein shake. She would like it to taste good to a teenager (so, probably sweet and not weird). I don't know anything about protein shakes, but I would like it to be affordable and not contain aspartame, acesulfame or similar artificial sweeteners (ok with sugar, sugar alcohols, etc.) I also don't mind if it's something we need to mix or a recipe we could make ourselves – in fact, I assume that would be cheaper. Any suggestions from the shake appreciators here?

What bean-based meals aren't bland?

With a few exceptions*, most bean-based recipes I've tried turn out almost inedible because they're so bland and boring. Especially beans and rice, but other recipes too. The reviews will always say it has tons of flavour but it's a lie. I want to eat more beans but I need flavour. Do you have a recipe with a lot of beans that actually tastes like something?
