How did the symbols for play, pause, record, stop, etc. on pretty much every A/V playback/recording device come to be?
Was there some sort of electronics industry consortium that decided on it, or a breakthrough device that first used those icons that everybody else copied? Why are the symbols what they are: how do two rectangles communicate "pause", or what does a red circle have to do with the idea of "recording"? How did these basic shapes get their meaning in this context?
