Is waffles.fm like oink? And if so, does anyone have an invite?

If not, is there anything as good as oink was out there now?

This post was deleted for the following reason: don't use mefi for invite codes -- mathowie

Best answer: First of all, this has been asked before.

Both waffles.fm and what.cd were created in the wake of the Oink shutdown. I'm not a member of either site so I don't have any commentary on their similarity to or difference from oink.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask for invites to bittorrent sites. Here are links to invite aggregators for Waffles.fm and What.cd.

IRC is the best place for this kind of thing.

Response by poster: Would MetaTalk have been better? I was curious about the state of bit torrent music sites in general, in addition to wanting a sweet sweet invite.

Response by poster: Yeah, online music sites are just like killing man.

item: I don't believe leaching torrents (downloading, not sharing) is illegal in Canada.

This thread is derailing massively. Maybe someone should start a MetaTalk page to discuss this.

Response by poster: Well i'm glad we sorted that derail out. It might have been the end of MetaFilter as we know it.

Best answer: 1. Waffles and What are fairly similar to oink, except: a) they (so far) have fewer members and thus sorting by snatches, seeders, or leechers seems to provide less of a 'what's new and hot in music' as oink used to. b) The assortment is waaaaay under the library that oink claimed, and though it is fairly broad (compared to say, 40 days of USENET posts) the seeder count is often quite low.

2. The first rule of getting invited anywhere is discretion and judgement: while asking for an invite on a site not specifically meant for the purpose and not even related in content may get you results, it's generally frowned upon. I realize that people who started downloading music/warez/etc in the Napster days may not be aware of the sort of social norms that surround private sites (and previously, BBSes) but the typical behavior has not been to let anyone who asks through the door (lest you end up like Oink). Begging, 'being cool', and 'proving your worth' are the typical routes to invites -- the piracy scene has long been about either what you have (a fast 14400 connection, the latest 0day waaaaareeez, hella accounts on other sites) or who you know (the Sysop, the kids from razor, someone with tits). This is probably why you're getting a little bit of friction: no-one wants to see the sites they just started using go down the same road the more public "private" sites have.

3. The best way to an account to additional torrent sites that are of any caliber is to secure a Power User status on a site that has a forum set aside for PU invites. Keep in mind a LOT of private torrent sites focus on scene releases only, which can be kind of annoying if you are looking for a larger library (usually scene releases only cover recently released or re-released media -- it's not often you find 'rare' media being released by scene groups).

The other way is to keep on top of sites that have open registration when they start and make an account before they go private, although there are so many ones not worth using this can be tiresome for say, anyone who has a day job.
