How does anyone become president of the united states?

How would you orchestrate a political campaign for president?
Given today's political climate and freedom of information (but not much else), assuming money, fame and connections are not necessary pre-existing factors, how would you orchestrate a viable bid for president of the united states?
I'm looking for fanciful ideas, not the legal process.
NOT:
step 1) register with FEC
step 2) fundraise
etc...
Something more along the lines of:
1) Stage dramatic news event
2) Build giant facebook group
3) Announce candidacy
get it? good.

Choose three campaign promises that cross political boundaries such as:
I will ban all ATM fees
I will raise the speed limit to 100 MPH
I will ban recorded phone calls to your home
The day after the Superbowl will be a National Holiday
Repeat these promises endlessly, ignoring all other issues.
Go on every late night TV show, radio show, or other mass media outlet, never saying no to an appearance request.
