I thought I was so clever...

IQ test question,
and answer
here. Can any of you geniuses please explain WHY this is the right answer,
I certainly have given up.
The Answer is "B", I know the second image showed up a little small.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Huh. This is a rare genuine askme double. There you go, nintendo!
You know, I absolutely love complex problems; I nearly became an air traffic controller (I may still at some point), I'm into trading, I am a fairly successful programmer who has done some pretty cool things... and I hate these things.
Which I guess means I thought I was clever too.
One thing I did notice, though: the background that the question is on looks awfully biological. And, uh, kind of dirty. I guess it's "clever" though, because it's a non-geometric tesselation, right... I repeatedly come to the conclusion that IQ tests are dreamt up by people suffering from severe Asperger's who are trapped in a world of pointless abstract mathematics overlayed on a pretty much nonmathematical world.
Luckily, I live in a world where I can use Google as my crutch! And Google points us to this AskMe, where rocket88 provides the explanation. Which is good, because I'd have never been able to sleep otherwise.

That's a terrible puzzle. If there are two different patterns at work, then why shouldn't there by a third pattern between the 8th and 9th square? And then the answer is allowed to be anything.
