What is the potential future of the United States of America?

The news today sounds bad, bad, bad. I know "bad news sells," but it really is starting to sound like difficult times are on the way.
Since MetaFilter has the most educated and intelligent audience in the web, I'd like to hear what you have to say.

What does our future really hold? How should I prepare?

Eventually, no matter what happens, America (or the land it used to be on) will be consumed in a fiery inferno, a glorious sweep of plasma and high-energy photons, as our sun - grown swollen and gravid with too much heat - explodes in a supernova.

I'm not sure how I would prepare for this eventuality, actually, other then to BOAKYAG.
