I Feel Like Judas

Urgent: I'm talking to a young relative on MSN who has run away across the border, I need to find a way to get her IP. She's using webmessenger.

She told me she's working the streets for money, and I would at least like to know what city she's in.

This post was deleted for the following reason: I'm sorry, but this is not appropriate for AskMe

Response by poster: Oh, and admins, once I get this answered to my satisfaction, can it be deleted? She's fairly savy and I know has read MeFi in the past. I don't want her to get wise and stop contacting me.

Tell the police. They probably have methods.

Best answer: If whatever program has the functionality to send images or files, that will cause a direct connection to be made to her computer. You can then use the command line program "netstat" to find out what you are connected to. "netstat -n" will make it display all connections with IP addresses, no DNS names. "netstat -b" will display what program is using each connection. So send her a big MP3 or something and use that to your advantage.

Ah, sorry, web messenger is their browser version and I'll bet it doesn't transfer files.

Get her to make an anonymous edit to Wikipedia? Aren't there some forums that display the IP of each poster?

Response by poster: Hmm, sending a file would be a good idea, if possible.

Response by poster: Tim, how do I determine which IP is hers?

Elimination. Use -b to only consider IPs used by that program. Display them with DNS names, you'll likely see that most of the connections for that program are to MSN itself. The port number/service name ("http" or "5190" after the IP) may be different when you're using the file transfer. Don't be sending files to 5 other people at the same time you're trying to get her IP, and you should be able to see it.

First, not everything people say on the Internet is true, even if they are your relation. Second, if she's on a NAT expanded subnet, you may learn nothing useful about her connection except the address of the router doing NAT, and it may not have logging enabled. Third, disclosing methods of how to track chat connections to young people seems like not such a great idea in a public internet forum. Fourth, asking the admins of this site to delete your question once you have an answer satisfactory to you is not how AskMe works.

Contact your local police with any information you have, so that they can follow up, and append to any missing persons reports open on the young person.

Response by poster: paulsc, I've been a Mefite for a while, I know this is not exactly 100% proper for AskMe, but I didn't really know what to do, and I knew I would get decent advice here.

She has been missing for weeks, and nobody in our family has heard from her at all. Then tonight, as I am about to go to sleep, I get her messaging me. I needed an answer immediately, if only to get a general idea of the part of the US she's in.

She's already had the cops pick her up before, they handed her over to her parents and she jumped out of their car while they sat in traffic, even before they could cross the border (she was already in the US).

Best answer: "... I know this is not exactly 100% proper for AskMe, but I didn't really know what to do, and I knew I would get decent advice here. ..."

I understand, and my comment was not intended as a callout, nor did I Meta this thread. In a situation where there seems a transient opportunity, the pressure of the moment can suggest action that is not fully considered.

Your email is in your profile, and you may yet get advice through that channel.
