I am considering taking over a small grocery store in Brooklyn. I am looking for reading material that would better prepare me for running this type of business. In absence grocery specific books, I would be interested in general small business management books that others have found useful. Thanks.

The Small Business Administration has web based resources that might be interesting. In addition to start up advise, they also offer on-going consultative services.

I typed about half an answer, but then it occurred to me that you didn't say whether you're considering taking over as management, as an owner, or both. Which is it?

Both the NYPL and the Brooklyn Library have small business resource centers that can help you with lots of local information.

go talk to a grocery owner or three in a similar demographic neighborhood- you should get a lot of practical advice.

I agree with Izzmeister - definitely check out the books and other resources mentioned, but going and talking to the source for practical advice seems like a great idea.

I'm thirding talking with others. There's not a single book out there that will prepare you for dealing with the public. Human beings are a special breed. For general small business resources, I recommend simply browsing the local bookstores. Magazines such as Forbes often do special quarterly editions on small business issues but the regular business magazines always have good tips on hiring, pricing, tax issues, etc.

Best of luck to you. I grew up in Brooklyn so I know you're gonna need that luck. :)

New york probably has an association of grocery store owners - whatever that association is can probably help you with info regarding what permits and such you need. As above practical advice from someone who owns or has owned such a thing will be invaluable.
