Are all firemen heroes?

Since, yes 9-11, it seems that every friggin fireman thinks you`re supposed to kiss their butts because some of their professional brethren were killed in the World Trade Center attacks. This, despite the fact that many of them may have actually cost lives by telling people to stay inside the buildings. I`ve seen firemen in my hometown who couldn`t carry their own butts if they needed to haul ass. Its kind of the same thing when police say they face danger and death every day, but the reality is they live and work in Mayberry R.F.D. It was their chosen profession, so should they just "buck up" like the rest of us and keep their damn traps shut?

This post was deleted for the following reason: you have issues, AskMe is not the place for them.

Sounds like someone has issues.

Best answer: This question is a little slanted, and I'm not sure how productive a conversation it will lead to. Most firefighters are brave, hardworking people who have a difficult and dangerous job that doesn't pay very well. That's a combination that will earn most decent people's admiration.

That being said, there are, of course townie boy firefighters that are unpleasant or unprofessional, just as in any trade. Overall, it's like any other job: You can't really judge the people who do it unless you've participated yourself or are close enough to really understand the lifestyle.

I suspect that, given that you wanted to rant/vent more than you wanted honest answers, this is inspired by some frustration you have with a particular fireman or group of firemen. Let it go. You don't have to believe that all firefighters are heroes to have some respect for a fairly noble profession.

Someone seriously has issues. Are all cops heroes? Are all blondes ditzes? Are all lacrosse players rapists? Come on. Get a life.

are you anti fireman, or are you just anti self indulgent pricks?

it sounds to me like the firemen you know are in love with themselves and value attention and want their egos stoked. it's amazing but those kinds of people exist in every type of profession.

and, i have to ask, did a fireman steal your gf or something?

Stink - Elsewhere you've described youyrself as a 'blogging newbie,' so I'll cut some slack, but this kind of tendentious foolishness is not what AskMeFi is for.

If you must, find some links that illuminate your points, and post this in the MetaFilter proper.

Dude, come back when you've gone into a burning building to check for trapped people.

Until then, "buck up" and keep their damn trap shut.

Oops. You seem to have stumbled into the wrong section. This section is "AskMetafilter." "Post-a-rhetorical-question- masquerading-as-a-rant-filter" is a few doors down the corridor.

Is your question "are all firemen heroes?" or is it "should they keep their traps shut?" ?

I've never had a firemen or police officer tell me they were a hero, nor even imply it. It's more like a label society puts on them. So, in my experience, their traps ARE shut, whether they should be or not.

Whether firemen and police officers are heroes by default, just for signing up, or whether they become so only after actually putting themselves in danger to help others...that might be an interesting question. But it doesn't sound like you actually want to know.

Or perhaps that should be "post a rant masquerading as a rhetorical question filter."

Looks like somebody didn't get their "Junior Fire Chief" badge after the firehouse tour.

This question is a little slanted

More than a little.

My answer: Anyone who runs into somebody else's burning building is probably a hero, unless they're crazy.
