Wirecutter has a good up-to-date Chromebook comparison.

Google's Chromebook support lifetime page is also useful.

Making sure you're aware of the new chromebook plus category.

Best answer: I've yet to see a good site that does this. Chromebooks are built based on reference motherboards. My Acer 714 is a Nami board. There are 7 other Nami Chromebooks and they are all substantially similar with CPU and compute capability. But HP's version has a different keyboard and maybe display panel, so there's still a little choice. Unfortunately no one talks about Chromebooks for consumers in terms of the board. I imagine the manufacturers don't like being compared that way. The link above is to a site that lists all known boards and systems

If I were buying a new Chromebook today I'd buy one of the Chromebook Plus devices on sale as listed here or here. Those links are to two blogs that are generally pretty good, if you read them for a bit you can get a sense of the product landscape.

Chromebook Plus is the new premium designation, but "premium" is like $400 on sale. You can also get a perfectly capable Chromebook for $200ish. For those I'd pick a fanless ARM system.

Chromebooks are always going on sale for $100-$200 off. I'd expect a huge Black Friday sale, but there's sales all the time.

Don't forget open box deals. I got a $200 Chromebook for $40 with "cosmetic issues". Looks brand new.
