How to recover a gmail email whose label was unchecked?

A gmail email was routed to Promotion. I did not want it in Promotion. I went to labels and unchecked Promotion, imagining that it would go directly to my in box. Instead it went into oblivion. Question becomes, how to get it back.
In future I will know to check Update first.
(It is not visible in trash, it is not visible in spam, I have logged out and logged back on.)

phunniemee is right - it's probably in All Mail.
Inbox is itself a tag, so if the email was tagged Promotion but not Inbox, then it would make sense for it to not appear in the inbox after the Promotion tag was removed. All Mail is the category that contains every email except spam, regardless of tags.

Seconding "it'll be in All Mail". This will be one of the folders in the left-hand sidebar. If you know the date of the email or some searchable words, it'll help; All Mail will likely contain a lot of email.
For future reference: you can move an email from the "Promotions" inbox to the regular inbox in Gmail's web interface by simply clicking on it and dragging it onto the "Inbox" tab. (And vice versa.)

To try to find it you can also try to go into History tab and walk though the ones around the time you did this.

Response by poster: Sadly, weirdly, it is not in All Mail.
But!
If you search for any of the terms in the email do any results populate?
This worked. Many thanks to all, but especially Phunniemee

There's a "move to inbox" shortcut you can use in future to avoid this annoying issue.
