Creature Report: What animal makes this strange sound?
October 5, 2022 11:46 AM
While walking in the woods in a remote area of the PNW, my husband heard this sound. It must be some kind of animal, but what exactly is it?
To be more specific, he was in the Hood Canal area, in Kitsap County. "Repeated every two seconds or so off in the woods, stopped as I drew nearer," he reports. Thank you!

It sounds to me like a wildcat.

specifically American bittern calls
I don’t think that’s what it is though, I wonder if it’s a rutting deer of some kind.

Oh, yeah, elk will be bugling this time of year. Changing my bet to elk.

My Cornell Merlin Bird ID app doesn't identify that sound as coming from a bird.
