Reading my way through San Francisco

The family is going to visit San Francisco for three days. I grew up in Sunnyvale, and moved away when I was 12. I've been back once or twice. In the last six months, probably as a result of reading JWZ all the time and being spoon fed by various algorithms, I've come to view the city as a post-apocalyptic nightmare of aggressive homeless, needle strewn gutters, broken electric scooters and digitized human waste. Can you help me rediscover the charm of the city and acquire some enthusiasm for this trip in the next three days? Or, recommend a good book that is set in the city? I thank you.

I realize that I am contributing to the problem, and pretty much meet the David Foster Wallace's definition of a mass tourist.
