Etiquette around guests and voice activated tech assistants?

Should hosts inform guests that there is a voice activated tech assistant in the house and offer to disable it if desired? Should guests be expected to ask to be informed, and can guests require such devices to be turned off?
I visited a new friend's home last night and after we'd been talking for about an hour, his device made itself known by piping up with "I'm sorry, I didn't understand that!"
I find voice activated technology grossly intrusive and wouldn't dream of having it in my home, and I object to being overheard in other folks' homes as well. My host unplugged the thing immediately, which is great, but it leads me to wonder what etiquette around these things should be.
What do you all think?
