Why am I shut out of my gmail??

What the heck just happened that I will not have gmail until they get back to me within 3 to 5 days??

I'm always automatically logged in to gmail. I just tried to get on, and it made me enter my password. I mistakenly entered an older password - I had changed it 2 weeks ago.
So they asked me about my phone number and then they sent a confirmation number to my alternate email.
THEN all I got was a message that they are investigating my account?
Now, they said "We received a request to recover the Google account" of my email. Ih had the choices: 1) No, I did not request this OR 2)I cannot get into my account, PROCEED.
So I checked I cannot get into my account.
And I get another pop up saying I will be contacted in 3 to 5 days.
This is a nightmare bc like most humans in 2018 I don't know anyone's contact info my heart.
What I happening and what can I do?
NOTE: Please, no speculations, "maybe you were hacked." I have a lot of speculations myself and am really in need of info. Thank you

Best answer: Did you try logging in again using the correct password? The only reason I ask such a basic question is because I tried to get back into an old Google account of mine recently, not knowing the password and not having access to the backup email address, and when I managd to get my security question wrong it told me I couldn't get access to the account. I then thought I'd try another password, and that one worked and let me in with no hesitation. It's not exactly the same scenario but saved me a lot of annoyance to just try logging in again with the correct password.
