What do you think has the biggest influence on public opinion?

This quote popped out to me in a book that was published in 2012 "And I believe in this new complex, dynamic world it is not the great work or epic play, as once was the case, that will shape public opinion, but those who understand mass media and the tools of public persuasion."
I don't think that's completely true. What do you think influences public opinion in 2018?
