Flight Attendants: attractiveness totally gone?

I fly extensively within the United States on commercial airlines. While other countries continue to use attractiveness as a qualification to hire flight attendants, has the U.S. completely gone the other way?
For the last 10 years, I've rarely experienced a flight attendant that is attractive. In other words, it almost seems like airline hiring managers go out of their way to hire those who don't convey elements of attractiveness.
To those in the know - is this the case?
