I Don't Want All Guns to Disappear

My family owns guns. We hunt. We also raise livestock, and defend against predators. We don't need AR-15s or 50 caliber rifles. Given all the violence men do with guns, we're motivated to act. After a few conversations, it's clear that we don't have a good framework for thinking about the issues. Help.

This is more of an add-on than a rebuttal of: I Want All Guns to Disappear in America.

We're completely in agreement with that sentiment in the wake of so much tragedy. We use guns. And we're completely out of excuses to do nothing.

We're sold on continuing education and insurance. We talked about an idea for required membership in state licensed militias (as an alternative to the insurrectionist clown-brigades).

We don't know where to start. The top twenty or so hits on our google searches were mostly NRA bullshit or bans on high-capacity magazines that only allow men to kill ten to twenty people before dropping the magazine and starting over.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Heya, I appreciate that "not sure how to proceed" seems to be the core of your dilemma but as framed it's not really clear here what you're asking Ask MetaFilter to help with; maybe circle around and find a more concrete question at the heart of this and revisit it then? -- cortex

What is your question?
