Why Religion?

What do you get out of participating in your religion? (bonus if you can answer from the perspective of someone who is culturally Jewish but grew up non-practicing, and maybe even considers themselves atheist? But other perspectives are quite welcome)
I've been toying with the idea of attending a reform synagogue close to where I live.
I am culturally Jewish, and proud of my heritage, but grew up very much non-practicing. I like the idea of having a community and participating in ritual and cultural traditions that connect me to a group of people in the world. I'm 27, a grad student, and living far enough away from my folks that I see them once or twice a year. I've been feeling isolated and disconnected from a larger community for a little while, and was wondering if going to shul would fill some of these gaps. I am, in addition to being culturally Jewish, an atheist, and my sense is that Judaism (especially reform Judaism) is OK with having at least a questioning relationship with God and the like, but has that been your experience?
What do you get out of your religious practice? How do you feel it enhances your life? What have been your experiences joining a church, synagogue, temple, etc. as someone without much background? Does this sound like a good idea to you? Is there another thing you do (along with or instead of a religious practice) that fills the same needs?
