Walk to the Right or Die

Don't schools teach kids to walk to their right in halls, on stairs, etc? Many adults I come across don't seem to have retained this practise and it annoys me everyday.
I clearly recall being taught to walk on the right side when I was in elementary school, and I have practised this ever since. However, the other day I was rounding a corner in a mall, walking to my right, and I almost smacked into a man who yelled the F-word because I dared to be in what he must have assumed was his path. I avoid this mall whenever possible because it is always super busy and people walk in every direction with no order.
Why don't malls and other busy places have signs with gentle reminders to walk to the right? Are there busy malls you know of that have some sort of guided paths to walk so that traffic is less chaotic?
I realize I must be more sensitive to this than the average walker, but boy has it always bothered me.
