I need something to read.

If you were going to go to the (new) book store and spend <$30 on a book at lunchtime today which book would it be and why?

Wolf in White Van, by John Darnielle. Why? Because it's been getting good, thoughtful reviews, it looks like it was written with intelligence, and it also looks like it will be very engaging.

This is answering your question as posed. This is what I would spend money on right now, but that means I haven't read it so YMMV etc etc

I'd get Gone Girl because I just saw the movie and it was really good.
Or I'd get The Lost Island because it's the next book in a series of books I enjoy by authors who I enjoy.
Or I'd get something from the children's section by Stephen Biesty to add to the ones sitting on my coffee table because he always makes sure someone is pooping in every illustration and that makes me giggle.

I just reread Kim Stanley Robinson's The Years of Rice and Salt. I have it on Kindle, but I'm seriously thinking about buying it again in paper. Awesome read!

I also enjoyed David Mitchell's The Bone Clocks.
