Japanese Horror Recommendations

I love Junji Ito. He's probably my favorite horror writer that I have ever read. I especially like the stories "Glyceride" "The Town With No Streets" and " The Window Next Door" . I like the feeling of dread they exude. Not really into jump scares, or torture porn at all. They're scary I guess, yeah. But I like the sort of slow crawl into absurdity ( The walls are suddenly leaking grease... Or the window outside is slowly creeping toward you, How bizzare is that?) So give me your best! I'm into short stories, manga, comics, and movies mostly, but I'll take novels, web stories, pictures, videos, or anything at all you can think of! Creep me out.

Bongcheon-Dong Ghost. Warning: This is terrifying.

Have you seen Uzumaki? Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Kairo is also a good one. Kôji Shiraishi's Noroi is good, if you are OK with found footage. I also think that Takashi Shimizu's Marebito might fit the bill.

Best answer: Fuan no Tane - a manga with short atmospheric chapters about urban legends and ghosts.

You might also like the Dionaea House, a web story about a haunted house. There aren't any jump scares (or the textual equivalent). I found it creepy in an understated way, and it's quite fun to gradually piece the story together and realise what's going on.

Bongcheon-Dong Ghost relies rather heavily on shock value, so be warned it might not be what you're looking for, though the tone is admittedly creepy.

Best answer: You need some Yoko Ogawa in your life!

Her collection of three novellas, "The Diving Pool" and her collection of short stories, "Revenge."

Response by poster: Oh this is wonderful! Yeah I've read Uzumaki, and Bongcheon-Dong ghost and loved every second of them. And as far as the jump scares go, I'm okay with them if they're bizarre, if that makes sense. I don't want some guy with a knife jumping out, but an eldritch horror with 7 eyes, slowly leaking a white fluid, and suddenly slithering after you ( after all it has no legs) is A-OK with me.

Are there any other sort of horror genres I should be looking for based on my interest in this?
