Is he just the really caring and compassionate guy I am in love with?

Most of my boyfriend's friends are recovering addicts of some kind or currently have an addiction they are trying to break out of. I have only met a couple of his friends and we don't usually socialize with them as a couple. His past girlfriends beyond his teenage years have also had a drug or alcohol problem of some kind and I know he considered it a red flag in terms of dating. He is not a drug user and on rare occasions drinks alcohol and ditto for me. This is a recent discovery for me and before I bring this up, I wanted to through this out and get some feedback. What could this be about? Is this something to be concerned about? What could this mean about our relationship? Is he just the really caring and compassionate guy I am in love with?
