correct international clothing sizes

I'd be curious to know other people's experience of clothing sizes in different countries. I've seen the published conversion charts and they don't tally with my own experience of regularly buying clothes on two continents over many years. As I am currently trying to do some size conversion of used clothing I would be glad of other peoples experience of this, please.

I am interested in clothing bought from ordinary chain stores that adhere fairly accurately to the national sizing system (e.g. not Chicos, USA, which seems to have its own system and not couture or home made).

and please say:
the gender of clothes you are buying
1. a country you buy clothes in, the size of the clothes you buy in that country
2. another country you buy clothes in, the size of the clothes you buy in that country
3. etc
I'd be glad of shoe sizes and other conversions too if you feel like sharing. Obviously I won't publish any individual's size.
