How does Nature 'wake up' in the Spring?

Recently discovered a quiet, frozen lake, a watershed, accessible w/ a permit. The ice, deep and strong enough, allowed me to walk out and survey the flat, white length and expanse. I would like to keep visiting and exploring this spot as winter ends, and the season changes. A non-scientist, help me to observe and appreciate Springtime. The earth, plants, animals, the water temperature; the warming air, the smells. What is afoot?

This post was deleted for the following reason: I'm sorry but this needs a narrower, more specific question to work for Ask Metafilter. If you have a specific mechanism of seasonal change in mind you want to ask about, contact us in the next half hour or so and we'll see if we can swap out the text. -- goodnewsfortheinsane
