How would we launch a new hackerspace in Contra Costa County, SF Bay CA?

Me and some friends really wish there were a good hackerspace closer to where we live in the S.F. East Bay. I would love to start one, and I am trying to get an idea of who is around our area who would be our target audience, potential supporters or even if we were so lucky our corporate or government supporters. Do you think this is a good idea? We were thinking of Concord or Pleasant Hill as locations, would that work for you? (more inside)
If you have any experience starting a hackerspace, I would love to hear from you. If you know of good places to look for information or to seek financial help that would be really valuable for me at this time. I am currently pursuing 501c3 status, so this would most likely be a hackerspace along the non-profit community organization model.
