Is my outdate Word software gumming up my computer?

Is the reason any action in MS Word is causing beach ball hangups on my computer (MacBook pro from 2010 running Lion) because it's the 2008 version and it's outdated for my OS?
I know Word is a behemouth, but I've never had performance as bad as this. Whenever I try to do something simple in Word- sometimes as simple as typing on an open document or clicking on another open document- I get the beach ball. I've been to the Mac Store with this and they say there's nothing wrong with my computer or what's running in the background. I'm trying to figure out if getting a newer edition of Word would make it more functional. Appreciate your thoughts on this!
