How to prevent lost customers in business?

If your are advertising and unable to answer all calls would you use an anwering service or let your voice mail take the message?

Many business owners lose new clients on a fairly regular basis because they can't answer all of thier calls and instead let the caller be greated by an answering machine. Curious as to how many people have used an answering service or live receptionist and if they in fact saw an increase.
