Reading HTM files on a Kindle Fire?

How do I view a local HTM file which I've stored on my Kindle Fire?

The Sherlock Holmes stories are, at long last, in the public domain again. Recently I located a complete collection, formatted as a series of HTM files. Now I'd like to put those onto my Kindle Fire so I can read them there. But I can't figure out how to view them once I've copied them over.

I have a USB cable and can open the Fire as an external disk, and can access its directory structure. I have in the past copied PDF files into the Documents directory on the Fire, and can read those fine. I tried putting the HTM files there, and they didn't show up on the Fire's bookshelf.

I also tried putting them in the Books directory, but that also doesn't work.

Is there some magic that can permit me to read these? If so, what is it?

(My main computer is Win7-64. I hope I don't have to find some utility to convert HTM to PDF, but if it comes to that, anyone got any suggestions for a good one? Can OpenOffice do that?)

Response by poster: Never mind. Yes, Open Office Writer can read the HTM file and export it as a PDF.
