Why should we call everyone in the military a hero???

What is the logical reason for such prolific labeling of everyone in the military as a hero?

I do not understand the rational behind this.

This isn't during World War 2 and there is no draft.

I am sure there are some who join for patriotic reasons like many after 9/11 but for the vast majority being patriotic has nothing to do with them joining.

Sure Sgt. Gutierrez could be risking his life but this day and age it is highly unlikely. I would argue that it is much much more dangerous to be a police officer or firefighter.

Simply put, saying they are heroes because they defend our country and put their life on the line is really stretching it.

It isn't 1945 and people aren't lining up to storm the beaches of Normandy.

So why are they so blindly praised and given discounts everywhere (car dealerships advertising to military etc) when being a police officer or firefighter is probably more dangerous with a more direct impact on our daily lives? What about teachers?

I am really starting to find it repulsive how much this is happening and I really want to understand it.
