"A modest man, but then he has so much to be modest about"
- (allegedly said by Churchill, about Clement Attlee; has been paraphrased in many ways)

It isn't exactly about narcissism, but is a great putdown (IMO) for a narcissist.

Best answer: Don't know the source, but I've always liked "Get off that cross, we need the wood"

That bit in Hitch-Hiker's Guide where you see your place in the universe? The name escapes me. It didn't work on Zaphod.

There are a billion people in China. It's not easy to be an individual in a crowd of more than a billion people. Think of it. More than a BILLION people. That means even if you're a one-in-a-million type of guy, there are still a thousand guys exactly like you. ~A. Whitney Brown, The Big Picture

and, my favorite:

When science discovers the center of the universe, a lot of people will be disappointed to find they are not it. ~Bernard Baily

It's the Total Perspective Vortex, and Zaphod entered it in an alternate universe created for him, resulting in him perceiving (correctly but confusingly) that he WAS the center of the universe. /nerdery More details here.

"You are an idiot. My life happens to, on occasion, suck beyond the telling of it. Sometimes more than I can handle. And it's not just mine. Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they're too busy with their own. " - Buffy, "Earshot" Buffy the Vampire Slayer

(BTW I can't vouch for the attributions. I just have a huge quote file that someone else put together many moons ago.)

I have a work colleague who says: " I got shit to do that ain't you, lady."

That was always my favourite. (And for the record, it was never directed at me.)

"Come down off the cross, we can use the wood" can be attributed to Tom Waits in his song "Come On Up To The House" off the Mule Variations CD.

Mchelly is right, that's a perfect quote.

"can be attributed to Tom Waits"

that saying is a lot older than 1999. a great quote to be sure, but a fairly common one, at least down here in the south.

It's a lot older than 1996 as well, when Firewater released their album "Get off the cross, we need the wood for the fire."

The cross one... I heard it this way. "How 'bout you get down off your cross, take the wood and nails, build a bridge and get over yourself."

My daughter says this all the time (not to me).
