Gentlemen of AskMeFi, what are your opinions on women changing their names after marriage?
I know various reasons why women change, hyphenate, add, subtract, hybridize, keep, etc, their names after they get married. But I'd love to know what men think of this, and why.
I ask because I recently read a piece in which the author's fiance got all upset because she wanted to hybridize her name and how he thought that that meant that she wasn't ready to be a wife. (???)
That made me realize that my sample of male friends are perhaps a bit more liberal. Most of them think, "it's her name, she can do whatever she wants with it."
So males, what are your opinions on the matter?
And if you (females too!) are from a different culture and they do things differently, I'd love to learn about that as well.
Many thanks!

Don't make me none. Coverture is crap anyway. Guys who don't care will get shit from the essentialists, but screw them.

I think women should keep their own names. I admit to a small prejudice against women who change their names to their husband's names. It's irrational of me to think this way on some level, but that's the way it is.

I think it is unfortunate that this cultural tradition has become embroiled in women's rights.
I fully support women's rights.
However, in this case, to assert the woman's right, she is in effect emasculating a man she loves. It does more damage to the male image and ego, than it does good for the female. IMO.

My wife kept her name. Which was fine, and really my preference also. My quip about that (repeated too often, I am afraid, is that I refused to GIVE her my name).
The only glitch for me (sorta) is that our kid has a hyphenated name, and she decided, as a teen to use my wife's name on an every day basis, since my last name is pretty much alphabet salad. It's fine, really, but also a tiny nick to my ego.

If she wants her husband's surname or her father's surname or her maternal grandfather's surnname or some combination thereof, it's of no concern to me.

I emasculated my husband, but he hasn't noticed yet.

I wouldn't complain if I married a woman who wanted to take my name. But I'd probably be happier if I found someone who wanted to keep their own name.
