Tell me your experiences with publicly-funded healthcare.

As an American (who's fully in support of a switch to publicly-funded healthcare), I'd like to hear of your experiences, both positive and negative, of using publicly-funded healthcare systems, as found in (all) other first-world countries. Specifically, I'm interested in European healthcare, being as they are touted as the best systems in the world.

I'm also getting extremely tired of the knee-jerk either "It's the best thing since sliced cheese!" or "socialized medicine, the devil!" reactions I've personally come across in America, especially since very little of my current friends/colleagues have had actual experience with such systems. I would prefer to have a very honest appraisal from Metafilter's experiences instead.

Furthermore, if there are some flagrant problems you've come across in your experiences, do you know of any progressive movements/legislation that are occurring to fix things? Thanks!
