List of Books - update?

BOOKS. In 1988, Frederic Raphael published "List of Books" -- a guide to essential reading on a variety of topics (economics, history, philosophy). But it's almost 20 years old. Does anyone know of a similar updated list (equally trustworthy and well researched), either on-line or in book form?

Lists of Bests might be a good starting point.

Josh Kaufman posted a Personal MBA Program: a list of business books under categories like Productivity, Corporate Finance, Self-Mastery, and How the World Works. I think he intends to update the list as time passes.

It's more fiction-oriented than you might be looking for, but there's always Nancy Pearl's most excellent Book Lust

The life time reading plan is a good place to start. Call back once you are done.

Lingua Franca used to have a "required reading" column with key books from various disiplines, and look what happened to them.
