What kind of people are into SCAT?

WHO are the perverts among us?
Are they're any studies out there on this?
Is "perversion" something that is scattered across ALL populations? Or are you likely to find them in certain groups? Are you likely to find specific fetishes in specific groups?
I thought about this when I watched 2 Girls 1 Cup (NSFW). I just wonder who are these people. Are they like normal people we see at work, or people you'll find in a mental institution?

This post was deleted for the following reason: since this isn't time sensitive, can you rephrase it and ask next week without all the loaded language? -- jessamyn
What does it mean for an action or desire to be 'perverted?' Clearly, it varies across time and between cultures.
In some cases, people may be interested in something 'perverted' regardless of what society expects of them. In other cases, people are attracted to things precisely because they are taboo or forbidden.
The latter tendency certainly isn't restricted to people who would be generally considered 'perverts.' Just look at the enduring appeal of rebel figures in literature or cinema.

What would you do if the people you knew were the plastic that melted, and the chromium too?
They are everywhere and nowhere. Could be any of us. Could be your parents.

I'm not much of a multiculturalist, usually. But in this case it has to be said: the judgment as to what constitutes "perversion" is culturally embedded. It isn't any kind of objective evaluation.
There are things we consider acceptable which are considered perversion in other cultures, and vice versa.

Looking at the tags that you added, and the "who are these people?" question, I have to say yes, very likely that there are people you talk to every day, at work, at retail stores, and other places that are perverts according to the list you have in your tags. Perversion will mean different things to different parts of society. Generally, no, "perverts" are no longer locked up into mental institutions.

For those insisting that perversion is culturally embedded, can you provide any examples? Cultures that tolerate/have tolerated coprophagia, necrophilia, pedophilia for example?

mattholomew,
Ancient Greek culture certainly involved a lot of pedophilia, and there are probably other examples. Child brides remain common in many countries.
Corpses and excrement tend to make people sick, so it isn't too surprising that there are often taboos related to them.

I am, by some standards, a pervert. I expect you are too. The question you're really asking is "are "normal" people fucked up enough to get off watching this?!" The answer is yes. You've got some otherwise normal people who have no "filth" taboo, and some among those who are attracted to things like that. It's actually pretty innocuous, compared to actual sociopaths, who are really disordered and have, for example, sexual compulsions involving rape and murder.

The UNICEF 2007 Photo of the Year showed a 40 year old groom and his 11 year old bride.
That provides some evidence of at least one culture tolerant of what we would consider 'pedophilia.'

Speak for yourself, I call corpses & excrement the start of a great weekend! Seriously though, could we say then that the types of "philias" that involve things that make you sick are universally considered taboo? I'm not trying to prove anything here, just curious.

Best answer: Talking about 'universal' taboos without extensive research is a risky undertaking, as far as being wrong is concerned.
That being said, it seems a reasonable hypothesis to say that there is some degree of corrolation between dangerous acts and taboo acts - from unprotected sex to motorcycle riding to necrophilia.

oral sex, masturbation and homosexuality were considered perversions by many, not so very long ago.
sexual deviance is determined by what are considered sexual norms in a particular culture. certain "deviations" become accepted (eg the above-mentioned, and things like bondage and foot fetishes are accepted as "normal" kinks these days, esp if you listen to/read dan savage) and then stranger things are still considered perversions. there's a whole spectrum of mild to wild when it comes to perversions and perverts.

Response by poster: Ok let's narrow this down to scat, necrophilia, beastiality, and pedophilia. I agree with the above, the word "pervert" is too subjective.
