Whale Wars - Pirate Heroes or Unwitting Ideologues?

Ive watched episodes 1-6 of Whale Wars and I agree with their interpretation that the Japanese are violating the anti whaling laws. Does it seem to you that they really don't have a clue what they are doing out there?
My thinking is most likely due to the fact that they only have a few constant people on board while the rest are pretty wishy washy liberal ideologues who are mostly there for a one time deal. The first mate even stated that they've had full on mutiny's, I wonder if he ever asked himself why that is.
It even seems like the captain is not in control.
Maybe its just the way they are shooting the series, does anyone else feel the same way? Or not? I'm really interested to know.
