How to find a good massage therapist in Portland, Oregon? (and what kind of massage would be appropriate?)

I'd like to get my 65 year old mom a massage session or two for X-mas.

She's had some problems with muscle pain in her legs (probably due to statin use) and has thrown out her back a few times over the years, but is otherwise in good health.

Is there some form of massage that would be more suitable for her than others, and are there massage therapists in the Portland/Beaverton area of Oregon that people can highly recommend? I'd rather that they didn't come to her house but rather worked from a nice clinic or spa or other work space.

(oh, and how much should I expect to spend?)

Aqua Terra is great. Husband and Wife team, so when your mom calls she can pick. they're both great, and centrally located. They do both relaxation massage and therapy massage--a friend of mine swears by them from when she was recovering from Knee surgery.

I think a single session runs about $100.

I have seen a good number of therapists in the Portland metro area and there are many good ones. There is one that I absolutely love in downtown Milwaukie. I'm not sure if I should post her contact info in an open Internet forum without contacting her first to ask. If you like, click on my profile and send me a metafilter mail. I'd be happy to send you her contact info.

Response by poster: thanks for the help, markovitch & bmosher! I'm arguing with my girlfriend whether or not this would be a good gift. If I win the debate, I'll give Aqua Terra a call and send you a quick email for info, bmosher.

I'll highly recommend Common Grounds in NE Portland (33rd and Killingsworth). Its a wellness center that has massage therapists, accupuncturists, chiropractors, etc. You can take a look at their website: http://www.cgwc.org/ If you give them a call, they can recommend different practitioners for different needs. They also should have their tubs up and running at the new location shortly and those are wonderful for soaking and then a massage. Massage rates usually run about $60 for an hour.
