Multi Effects or Boutique Guitar Pedals All the Way?

I'm building out a guitar effects pedalboard and want advice. What pedals should I start with and what sequence is generally recommended for the standard(ish) pedals?
Okay, so I've been playing more lately and want to build out my very limited pedalboard. I have an overdrive, wah, reverb, and tuner pedal I'm happy with.
Pedals I know I eventually want:
Phaser
Boost
Delay
... And I can guarantee more will follow.
Now, I don't know what exactly I want, but I've been watching reviews on YouTube so I have a vague idea of a few pedals of that sounds good to me. So having said that, I was thinking I could start with a good multi effects pedal (probably the Line 6 M5).
Is that a waste of money, or would it be a good stop gap until I can collect the boutique pedals I want from Walrus, JHS, etc? I know quality has improved in recent years, but I'm having trouble shaking the stigma that individual pedals are generally specialized and therefore better. Also, if I choose to jump straight to the boutique pedals, is there a recommended sequence for the signal chain that makes sense, or is it a subjective preference thing?
Thoughts and opinions appreciated!
