Is there such a thing as being too good? (A question about Denis Johnson)

Is there anyone that isn't a big fan of Denis Johnson and can they explain why?

It took me over three months to read Train Dreams. When I read it, I recognized all these positive attributes, but I just felt like it was too perfect?

I then read Angels, a very short novel, but it took me ages to get through. It left me with the same sensation as Train Dreams: amazingly written, but it felt very studied.

I understand that different novels speak to different people and maybe Johnson's work just doesn't get me on that level. But I'm curious if anyone else has had similar feelings about reading Denis Johnson and can explain their reasons for not being the biggest fan. Or maybe you feel that other writers are "too perfect."
