OSX RealPlayer sends audio to internal speaker

Mac Pro, OS X 10.4.10: Why in the hopscotching christ is Real Player (10.1.0) sending audio to the internal speaker? Output is directed to go to the line out in System Preferences, and no other media players or noisemakers fail to do the right thing.

This didn't happen in the past, but I can't pin down when the problem crept up. I deleted the Real-related plists in my Library and let it reconfigure itself, to no effect.

I can confirm that this is happening to me as well. Would love to see a solution/explanation.

Check the audio settings in Audio Midi Setup and make sure they're set to 16-bit, 44.1 KHz?

Best answer: OK, then! Here's the fix for this problem: open GarageBand (no, really - GarageBand, not System Preferences); start a project, open the preferences menu, and set Audio Output (from Built-in Output) to Line Out. Voila!
