What did I watch?

Seeing a Revenant gif has reminded me: I've been trying to identify a film I saw for ages. I believe it was set on the West Coast, sometime from the mid-1700s to the late 1800s. The main character is... ill? injured in some way? and spends most of the film trying to get to the coast, or some other body of water.

At the end, he reaches some sort of small village, which I seem to remember was surrounded by a stockade. The end of the film is the protagonist, dying, being pushed out into the water in a canoe.

It was pretty art-house-y, from what I remember, and quite contemplatively shot?

Thanks for any ideas!

If you are curious to watch it, The Revenant was a remake of the Richard Harris film Man In The Wilderness.
