Name of left-wing journalist who went independent?

I heard an interview on an NPR with a left wing (NPR?) journalist who spent a lot of time with right wingers and became an independent. He mentioned that NPR has a lot about gun murders but neglects stories about guns used for self-defense, and also fails to report on lukewarmists who talk about policy issues. Anyone know the journalist's name?

My NPR station is WHYY. The interview was probably on Fresh Air or Radio Times.

Not a journalist but a former NPR CEO Ken Stern wrote a book Republican Like Me.
