Inspirational literature, circa 1998?

I'm looking for a book of non-cheesy inspirational literature from around 1998...details inside.

I bought a softcover book in 1998 that I really liked. I loaned it to someone and never got it back but I'd like to have it again.

My memories are vague but:
1) It was an anthology of inspirational literature. Middle to high brow. I think stuff like Wendell Berry and Thoureau (but I'm not sure if those two were actually in there).
2) It was a thick softcover, probably 300-400 pages
3) I think it might have had a plaid cover with a rectangular title box in the middle.

That's pretty much all I can remember. Does anyone have any ideas? I bought it in a book store in East Hampton, NY, I'm pretty sure it was 1998. It was on display.

Work and the Life of the Spirit seems to be a good match: 1998, 305pp., anthology of inspirational lit, includes those two authors and many like them, rectangular center box amid busy design, etc.

Might it have been one of the Graywolf Annuals?

That's a good description of a book I have, called Stories of the Spirit, Stories of the Heart. Published 1991, but I think I got it on remainder years after that. It is full of good, pithy readings and I've used it many time for occasions and public speaking and that sort of thing.
