First IT Contract, what is procedure for extension

Should I ask my immediate boss for his opinion on a contract extension?

I'm currently working my first IT contract (W2 type) which is set to expire in August. I've been asked by my recruiting company to extend until December, but I have concerns over if my immediate boss knows or if it was approved by his boss (another consultant/project manager) without his knowledge. Without going into too many details, it has recently come to light that the project is over budget and there are serious concerns over the number of consultants on the project. So my main concern is that I don't want to sign just to be let go a few months later, and I have a given stop date w/ a raise so quitting becomes a bit difficult due to the contract. Should I ask my immediate boss if he wants me to extend?

Any reason you wouldn't (couldn't) share this information with the recruiting company? They probably have at least as much at stake as you. If they had this heads-up, they might be in a better position to help you avoid bad consequences.
