What book was this?

What children's book was this I read a while ago?

The part that I remember was the main character learning telepathy, starting out by closing his eyes and picturing his sisters face, and practicing until he could see with his eyes shut. The plot was along the lines of a self-realization journey, and might have taken place in India or somewhere similar. I want to say that it was by Roald Dahl, but none of his titles look familiar. I would guess that I read it in 6th grade, +/- a few years if that gives any context. Thanks for the help!

99% sure it's not Roald Dahl. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Was it the Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar?

I haven't read it in a long time but that sounds like the Roald Dahl story.

Seconding Henry Sugar. You've got a couple of the details mixed up, but the gist of the story is there. He uses his telepathy to cheat at cards and gives the money to orphanages.

Henry practiced with a candle's flame. One of my top ten books, that, and I especially like the story of the Fingersmith.

It's a great collection and worth owning. Incidentally it is actually not a children's book, I'd say more aimed at an audience age from young adult up. Dahl wrote a fair bit of fiction for adults, some of it quite satirical and ribald and some macabre verging on horror (the collections Kiss Kiss and Switch Bitch are both full of great stuff).

Aaaand fail.

Hey, that's why you reserve that 1% of doubt.
