Feline Anemia Advice

Feline anemia. Our youngish (4 year old) male short-haired domestic began feeling lethargic about a month ago. We took him to the veterinarian yesterday. He had a red-blood-cell count of 8% and was prescribed dioxycycline (to get rid of any possible infections causing the anemia) and prednisone (to suppress the immune system, preventing destruction of the few remaining red blood cells the poor guy has). Questions: Any experiences with feline anemia? Prognoses? Advice? Anything will help! Thanks!

Well, I ran your question past my Vet Tech wife, and she is a little concerned. Based on the little information here, it sounds like you are not getting great care. If a "red-blood-cell count of 8%" means a PCV (Packed Cell Volume) of 8%, your cat should probably be getting a blood transfusion immediately. In addition, antibiotics are generally not indicated for anemia, unless there are other things going on. If you can give her the following info she can give some more concrete advice: 1) What is his White Blood Cell count (also known as a CBC or a Complete Blood Count)? 2) Has he been tested for hemobartenella? 3) Is the cat eating normally?

Frankly, based on the info as it stands, my wife would suggest a second opinion (preferably at a specialty or referral hospital). Good luck.

Seconding Rock Steady, get a second opinion as soon as possible. A red cell count that low needs further, specialist, investigation quickly.
