I know what I like

Hey you cultured folks, help me find some art!

I'd like to buy an art book for someone who likes these (I like them a lot too). Something nice in hardcover. Can anyone recommend similar artists? Maybe an artist who paints lush still lifes that are a little "off-kilter"?

Thanks!

How about Michael Sowa (he had a couple of pieces featured in Amelie)? (on Amazon)

Response by poster: Oh, I LOVE Michael Sowa. I have postcards of his work. I'm not sure that this person would appreciate his sense of humor, though. This is kind of serious, not so whimsical person.

Hm...is Arcimboldo too whimsical for them? (His stuff is hanging in the Louvre.) What other stuff does this person like?

Response by poster: Arcimboldo might work.

I don't really know what other stuff he likes. I only found out about the Kevin King paintings because he bought the top one for something like $9,000 and I just mailed the payment. He's a collector, but the paintings in his office aren't remarkable. I imagine if they were, he wouldn't have brought them into the office!

Having a quick browse around Amazon and I found this list which seems to have a variety of interesting selections, and I'm sure related browsing will turn up many more...and hopefully the right one for your gift. Best of luck with your search!

Response by poster: Thanks! I browsed Amazon for awhile, but I wasn't really sure what to search on. This will help.

Response by poster: Don't know if it will be helpful, but this is a link to the interior designer who designed their home.

much broader than your request, but this is my art book of the year: 30,000 Years of Art by the editors of Phaidon press. Well designed, as you would expect from Phaidon, and anyone would enjoy paging through it on a day off. Weighs 13lb, though.

The amazing Walton Ford, though the works are not so much "lush" as unsettling. Definitely off-kilter. Also political, and also darkly funny.

If you want an earlier artist, there's always Martin Johnson Heade.

Response by poster: Martin Johnson Heade is perfect. I'm having trouble finding a hardcover for under about $90 bucks - most of them are much higher. I even checked out Ebay with no luck.

I like the Walton Ford too, but everything seems to be unavailable. Maybe I'll swing by the Brooklyn Museum on the way home and see if the store has anything.

Those are definitely the kind of things I'm looking for.

I'd call ahead to the Brooklyn Museum: when I saw the Ford show last year there weren't any catalogues available in the shop. Hopefully they've stocked up. It was a really terrific show. If you or your friend are further interested in Ford, there's a good segment on him in one of the PBS "Art 21" series, which you can get on Netflix, I believe.

Re Heade, a seller on abebooks says they have a new copy of the late 90s National Gallery show (also terrific) for under $50.

Good luck!

Response by poster: Wow, thanks! That same book is selling on Amazon for $199! Do you think the one on abebooks might be a soft cover? It doesn't say. I just can't account for the huge price difference. It seems too good to be true! I'll contact the seller. If it's hardcover, I think I've found my present.

This might be old hat to you, but AddAll.com searches multiple used bookstore sites for you. Here is the book azure_swing found, for example.

Response by poster: Not old hat at all - I'd never heard of it! Thanks guys, I appreciate your help.

Too bad I don't knit. I could knit him a book.
