How to fix a buzzing sound on a vhs tape?

I'm in the process of transferring old VHS tapes to my computer. I'm encountering a buzzing noise on one of the tapes and wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix it.

I'm using a VCR that I purchased at a thrift store and a Diamond OneTouch Capture VC500 to connect to my computer. I've transferred several vhs tapes successfully. One of the tapes (from 1995) has a distinct loud buzzing noise that makes the audio difficult to hear. The first part of the tape sounds fine. The buzzing starts partway through the tape. I do not think the VCR or the OneTouch device are the issue. Assuming that the problem is with the tape itself, is there anything I can do to the tape to fix the buzzing sound?

I can't imagine it's the tape itself. I would have to assume that the buzzing was recorded onto the tape.

My guess is that it's 60 cycle hum, and you could try to EQ it out with a notch filter. Most video software has audio plugins that have presets to get rid of 60 cycle hum. But if it's really loud, it may be a lost cause.

To check the tape, eject the VCR once the sound problem comes in, and flip open the top of the VCR to reveal the tape. You'll be able to see if the tape is the issue if you can see any sort of physical trouble, such as folding or crimping. Gentle massage might work - but if it goes on for a long time obviously you've got a lot of straightening to do!

Putting the audio through one of the noise/hum reduction tools in Audacity or Audition should work pretty well.
