Favorite things to do/see in New York City in early October?

Theater, show, sights to see, and activity recommendations.
I am going to be visiting a friend in New York City Friday Oct 7th through Monday Oct. 10th. To help relieve the burden of planning things to do or see while I am there I am trying to help brainstorm ideas. We will be based out of Washington Heights.
On past visits to NYC I have been to the MET, MOMA, Central Park, Upright Citizens Brigade, Highline, Transit Museum, and various Broadway productions.
Do you have any go to recommendations for things to do that are lesser known but you have really enjoyed. Things that are less well known than the major tourist attractions.
I always like theater and live music. Are there any lesser known ongoing productions/shows that you would really recommend?

Bedlam Theatre's production of "Sense and Sensibility" is one of the best plays I've seen in recent years.

Broadway: The Front Page (with Nathan Lane, John Slattery, John Goodman, Jefferson Mays, Robert Morse, Rosemary Harris and Sherie Rene Scott) just started previews. Falsettos started previews last night. There's Hamilton, of course. We really love School of Rock, too.

Since you will be in Washington Heights check out the Hispanic Society of America Museum at 155th and Broadway. They have an outstanding collection, it is free, and almost nobody goes there. While you're in Washington Heights, keep an eye out for the many storefronts and buildings currently adorned with birds of the Audubon Mural Project.

Choral evensong on Sunday afternoon at Saint Thomas Church is quite beautiful, with one of the top boys' choirs in the U.S. There's no Eucharist and it's very minimally participatory (in a choral evensong, the choir performs most of the ritual), so you needn't be an Episcopalian or even a Christian to attend. I see they're doing How lovely is thy dwelling place from the Brahms Requiem as the anthem on the 9th. There's organ music afterwards.
Don Giovanni is on at the Met that Saturday night.

If you've got five hours to kill, the Met's Saturday Matinee on the 8th is Tristan und Isolde, and it's a very impressive production.

I just saw The Humans on Broadway last night and it was phenomenal.

Go see Sleep No More. It is astounding. Like being on a Star Trek holodeck for a couple of hours, running a most excellent creepy/noirish/Lynchian program. If you have the time and money, do dinner at their themed restaurant (The Heath) beforehand.

Seconding Sleep No More. Seriously. It's a hell of a trip.
Also, the Eldridge Street Synagogue is one of the most beautiful rooms I've ever been in.

Hit up the Highline in the daytime, then head over to Magnet Theater for great improv on Tuesday (musical) or Wednesday (not musical) nights, go hit up an Apollo show (easy trip down for you on the A train), walk across the bridge, go up to Wave Hill in the Bronx - lots of great reasons to be outdoors during the day, enjoying nature, and hanging out at night, grabbing a beer in a warm bar before heading on home.
