Name my new kittens [nerdy-edition]
February 15, 2016 12:28 PM   Subscribe

I'm adopting two five month old kittens. Yay! Now: what do I name them? Picture 1, Picture 2. The tabby is a girl, mild and pretty shy. The black and white is a boy, super playful and outgoing - he's going to be a trouble-maker! Name criteria inside.

I'd like names based on something - book, tv, movie, musical. I like all sorts of stuff, but gravitate toward sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and mystery.

Some names I'm considering:

-Eve & Roarke (from J.D. Robb's In Death series)
-Imp & Max (Imp short for Imperator Furr-iosa, from Mas Max: Fury Road)
-Scorn & Trouble (two of Morwen's cats from the Enchanted Forest books by Patricia C. Wrede)

I am open to non-nerdy names, too, of course, if they fit!

Thanks, mefites! :)

I came to say Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, so I second that. They can be Hammy and Lizzy! Alternatives, if you're willing to disregard gender: Angelica and Eliza, Hamilton and Laurens, Hamilton and Burr.

And if you're not sold that they should be named after characters from history/Hamilton, maybe you just haven't listened to the cast recording all the way through enough yet. A few hundred times should do it.

Did they ever push an old lady into an oven? Even if not, I suggest "Hänsel & Gretel".

I see Gozer for the troublemaker. If you want a 2nd name to match the source Dana for the girl. If the names can be from another source I'd go with Echo for the girl.

ZOMG they are adorable!!!

Weridly, I too first thought Hansel and Gretel. I have NO idea why.

I like people names for kitties. Lulu for the tabby girl and Max for your tuxedo boy.

One of my first thoughts was also the Firefly route - Mal and someone, maybe Kayleigh? (Or to continue on the Nathan Fillion route, Castle and Beckett?)

Merry and Pippin also came to mind, as did some sort of Tamora Pierce reference (I thought there was a cat in the Daine books named Scamp, which I think is a great name for your little fellow, but apparently I'm misremembering and Scamp and Grizzle are young dragons). Numair and Daine, maybe?

I love your original suggestion of Scorn and Trouble (especially since it sounds like your fellow might be a Trouble anyway!).

If you're willing to be sort of ironic in the role-reversal, Phryne and Jack could be really cute too.

Or Miles (Vorkosigan) and... well, he doesn't really go for demure women, but someone. Rowan? Elli? Taura? Elena (to get the sister-not-partner) reference?

Your kittens are adorable!

BTW, I love Imp and Max.

What about Merlin & Nimue? From WPedia:

Lady of the Lake is the titular name of the ruler of Avalon in the Arthurian legend. She plays a pivotal role in many stories, including giving King Arthur his sword Excalibur, enchanting Merlin, and raising Lancelot after the death of his father. Different writers and copyists give the Arthurian character the name Nimue, Viviane, Vivien, Elaine, Ninianne, Nivian, Nyneve, or Evienne, among other variations.
...
When Malory was looking at other texts to find inspiration for his characters, he chose the best aspects of all the other Lady of the Lake characters, making her a compassionate, clever, strong willed, and sympathetic character. Nimue is a different kind of woman, one who does not shrink behind the male figures in her life. Instead, she is pragmatic, unflappable, and knowledgeable.

Response by poster: Hi everyone - just a brief and sad update about the kitties. Before they came home with me, we knew that they were having some tummy troubles, and the rescue organization believed it was due to stress.

While they seemed to be doing well with me in my place, uh, emotionally, for lack of a better term, their tummies did not get better - I started finding liquid poo all over the place. That, coupled with a big flare up in my depression, made me and the rescue organization mutually decide it was in my and the cats' best interest to go back to the rescue organization, who had the time and resources to care for their tummy troubles. (They were with me for a week.)

However, it an even sadder and shocking turn of events, it the boy cat was diagnosed FIP, a fatal and fast-acting illness with no cure. He went into a rapid decline, was given some holistic treatments and improved for a week, and then ended up passing away last Saturday, two and a half weeks after they went back to the rescue organization. From all reports the sister is fine and doing well, and was with her brother and licking him while he passed.
